Overview of the workshop at NDE Center

On January 22, 2025, the Center for Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) organized a workshop titled “Application of Non-Destructive Testing Methods in Construction” to promote research and applications in the construction sector. The workshop was attended by the Center’s leadership, members of the Science, Technology, and Training Council, representatives from various departments, and NDE experts.

At the beginning of the workshop, Ms. Dang Thi Thu Hong, Acting Deputy Director of the Center, delivered a speech highlighting several Non-Destructive Testing methods in construction (NDT-CE) that the Center has been implementing in research and application activities. On behalf of the leadership, she emphasized that promoting the application of NDT-CE is a crucial mission that should be prioritized and strengthened in the future. Through the workshop, the Center aimed to gather insightful opinions from experts to develop specific and practical directions aligned with NDE Center’s growth objectives.

Online presentation by MSc. Nguyen Le Son

The workshop featured a presentation by MSc. Nguyen Le Son, an expert in NDT-CE, titled “Enhancing Safety and Sustainability for Power Plants, Dams, Civil Concrete Structures, and Cultural Heritage Using NDT Methods.” His presentation emphasized the necessity and role of NDT-CE in construction quality management. With its ability to detect defects, degradation, and performance deficiencies early, NDT-CE helps prevent accidents, minimize downtime, and optimize asset management strategies, ultimately protecting communities and ensuring sustainability.

The presentation also covered “Structural Pathology,” explaining the causes of structural degradation and identifying common defects in reinforced concrete structures. The final section highlighted several NDT-CE methods applied by NDE-HCM in inspecting structures such as My Thuan Bridge, Phu Tho Hospital, Nhi Thien Duong Bridge, Binh Thuy Bridge, Tra Noc Bridge, Cai Mep Port, and others. In conclusion, MSc. Nguyen Le Son proposed future directions, including reviewing and restoring NDE Center’s existing equipment, developing an NDT-CE training program aligned with ISO 9712, and strengthening collaboration with the IAEA through cooperative programs.

Following the presentation, participants engaged in discussions, asking questions about NDT-CE methods and equipment. The workshop also addressed the training program for NDT-CE methods for Lao PDR personnel through the Vietnam-IAEA-Lao tripartite cooperation program.

Through this event, the NDE Center’s leadership and experts discussed and set specific directions and goals for future research and application of NDT-CE methods at the Center, aiming to participate in and take a leading role in inspecting key national projects.
